Our Projects
Our partnership focuses on improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene in underserved communities. Through innovative projects, we've already provided thousands in Sierra Leone with sustainable WASH solutions, gender and hygiene support, and microfinance opportunities.
Demand Driven WASH Self Supply (SLE 1078, 1101 & 1109)
Donors: Charity Water and WHH
WaSAP and WHH launched a WASH project in 2021, funded by Charity Water, to improve food security and access to basic water and sanitation services in Bonthe district. The project has constructed 830 EMAS wells, 14 mechanized wells, and 28 flush toilets, improving WASH in 10 schools and 14 health centers. About 60,000 people have benefited from clean drinking water and hygiene awareness programs. Additionally, 60 technicians were trained in drilling and repairs, and 30 Village Savings and Loans groups were established to support household sanitation investments.
WASH Systems Strengthening in fragile and developing contexts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SLE 1089)
Donor: BMZ
WaSAP is partnering with WHH and MoPADA to implement the Global WASH project in Sierra Leone, aiming to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 6 by improving health, nutrition, and livelihoods. Starting in December 2021 and ending in April 2025, the project has constructed over 200 shared household wells and four hand-dug wells at institutions. It established 100 Village Savings and Loans groups in eight chiefdoms, offering microfinance to support WASH services and livelihood activities. Additionally, 16 local technicians were trained in EMAS well drilling and repairs of Indian Mark II and EMAS pumps. The project works to enhance access to water and sanitation, improving overall community health.
Improved access to Sustainably Managed Micro-Finance and WASH Systems (SLE 1072)
Donor: EU
WHH, WaSAP, MOPADA and SEND-SL partnered to implement The Wash Self Supply project in Kenema district, targeting seven chiefdoms. WaSAP completed the construction of 1000 EMAS drilled wells and 1000 EMAS latrines in (55) fifty-five communities in these chiefdoms. MOPADA implemented ‘Hygiene and Gender Model Family’ in these communities and SEND-SL established and supported VSLA groups with micro finance funds to sustain and repair the constructed WASH facilities. The project was implemented from 2020 to 2022 and benefited over 100,000 people in the seven chiefdoms.
Reduction of risk of new outbreaks of water borne diseases and health epidemics by improving WASH in Bonthe District, Sierra Leone (SLE 1061)
Donor: BMZ
The project SLE 1061, implemented by WaSAP in partnership with SEND-SL and WHH, ran from 2018 to 2021. During this time, WaSAP constructed 1,000 EMAS wells and 330 household latrines across 40 communities in the Dema and Sittia chiefdoms in Bonthe District. SEND-SL supported the project by establishing VSLA groups, promoting hygiene and the Gender Model Family approach, and mobilizing funds from households to finance latrine construction. More than 50,000 community members benefited from this initiative, and 60 local EMAS technicians were trained to maintain and repair the WASH facilities.
